GST/HST bookkeeping, input tax credits and reconciliation
GST and HST are only as reliable as the bookkeeping underneath them. AI Bookkeeper records the tax portion of each document separately, keeps the supporting receipt attached, and gives you a period summary of tax collected and tax paid so you can prepare a return with real numbers.
14-day free trial. No credit card required.
Rates that follow the province and the date
GST applies at 5% across Canada, while HST provinces such as Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island use a combined rate. Rules are date-effective, so a document dated before a rate change is treated with the rate that applied then.
- All 13 Canadian jurisdictions, including GST-only territories
- Printed tax amounts are kept as printed; estimates are labelled as estimates
- Registration numbers and filing frequency recorded per business
Input tax credits with their support
Tax paid on business purchases is posted to its own account and stays linked to the receipt or invoice that supports it. When a claim is questioned later, the document is one click away from the transaction.
Reconcile before the period closes
Match bank activity to recorded transactions, clear the review queue, then close the period. A closed period rejects new entries dated inside it, so a filed quarter stays as filed and corrections are posted as reversals in an open period.
Frequently asked questions
Does the software file my GST/HST return?
No. It prepares a period summary of tax collected and tax paid that you or your accountant use to complete the return. Nothing is transmitted to the Canada Revenue Agency automatically.
What happens when a receipt does not show the tax separately?
The amount is flagged as an estimate rather than treated as a printed fact, and the document is sent to review so a person can confirm the treatment.
Can I track GST and a provincial tax on the same purchase?
Yes. GST and a separate provincial tax such as QST, PST or RST are recorded on their own lines so each can be reported separately.

AI Bookkeeper is bookkeeping software, not an accounting, tax or legal advisor. Figures and reports are prepared for your review and should be verified before filing.
